Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has emerged as the leading choice among opposition figures in a new Mizani Africa opinion poll on potential opposition leadership ahead of the 2027 General Election.
According to the poll released on Friday, September 25, Kalonzo received 37.2 per cent of the responses, followed by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna at 19.7 per cent and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i at 12.9 per cent.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua polled at 6.4 per cent, followed by Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro at 5.1 per cent. Former Chief Justice David Maraga received 2.2 per cent, while Martha Karua and Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah recorded 0.7 per cent and 0.4 per cent respectively.
The poll also recorded 15.4 per cent of respondents as undecided, indicating that a sizeable section of those surveyed had not settled on a preferred opposition figure at the time of the survey.
Kalonzo’s showing is likely to renew discussions within opposition circles over the leadership of a possible coalition as political parties and leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
The survey, however, measures respondents’ preferences for an opposition flagbearer and should not be interpreted as a prediction of the eventual presidential election outcome. Reports on the poll also note that key methodological details, including the sample size and margin of error, were not publicly disclosed.
The findings come as opposition leaders continue consultations and public engagements, with the question of who could lead a joint opposition ticket remaining part of the wider 2027 political debate.
