The Kitui County Ministry of Health and Sanitation is hosting a delegation from Kwale County for a benchmarking visit aimed at strengthening cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and patient-support services.
The delegation is visiting the Phangisile Mtshali Cancer Centre at the Kitui County Referral Hospital, where health teams from the two counties are exchanging practical experiences on the delivery and management of cancer care services. The engagement is being supported by the Centre for Medical Mobilisation Board (CMMB Kenya).
The programme includes a guided tour of the cancer centre, with the delegation expected to learn about key areas including ECHO platform operations, histopathology laboratory services, oncology pharmacy, cancer registry management and cancer-care financing models.
The teams will also undertake a community field visit and engage cancer survivors at a local apiary project site. The session is providing an opportunity to explore how community-based support and economic empowerment initiatives can complement clinical treatment and improve the experience of cancer patients and survivors.
The benchmarking exercise is expected to strengthen collaboration between Kitui and Kwale counties while providing an avenue for the two health teams to share practical approaches that can be adapted to their respective settings.
The visit further highlights Kitui’s expanding capacity in specialised healthcare and the role of partnerships, knowledge-sharing and continuous learning in improving cancer-care services and patient outcomes.
