A KSh50 billion cement factory being constructed by Devki Group in Ngaaie, Mwingi North, is set to usher in a new era of industrialisation in Kitui County, with the plant expected to commence operations by mid-2027.

Devki Group Executive Chairman Dr Narendra Raval said the investment will create thousands of employment opportunities while stimulating local businesses and improving the livelihoods of communities living around the project. The factory is the first cement manufacturing facility in Kitui County, taking advantage of the vast limestone deposits found in the Ngaaie area.

Raval said construction of the plant is progressing well and is expected to be completed by the middle of next year. He noted that thousands of residents are already benefiting from employment and emerging business opportunities associated with the construction of the multi-billion-shilling project.

Once fully operational, the factory is expected to generate additional direct and indirect jobs while creating a market for transporters, suppliers, traders and other local enterprises. Raval said increased local cement production could also help reduce transportation costs and improve access to the commodity in the region.

The Devki chairman said the investment was also guided by the company’s desire to maintain good relations with neighbouring communities by ensuring they benefit from the project. He spoke during a meeting with residents at Kalonzo Musyoka Secondary School, where Devki plans to support the construction of modern classrooms and an administration block.

The company is also supporting the school with a reliable water supply and plans to introduce a school feeding programme, which Raval said could later be extended to other neighbouring schools. The interventions are expected to improve the learning environment and access to basic services for pupils and students in the area.

The investment comes as Kitui intensifies efforts to harness its mineral resources to drive industrialisation and expand economic opportunities. Raval said Devki’s ultimate goal is to improve the lives of local residents while making the Ngaaie cement project a catalyst for wider economic growth across Mwingi North and the wider Kitui region.
