Sand Harvesting Halted Near Tiva Bridge as Multi-Agency Team Raises Safety Concerns

Residents living around Tiva Bridge have been urged to stop sand harvesting near the bridge after a multi-agency committee raised concerns over damage linked to the activity.

The call was made on Tuesday during a public participation forum hosted at Tiva Bridge by Yatta Kwa Vonza MCA Hon. Mark Nding’o. The meeting brought together representatives from relevant national and county government agencies, security teams and other stakeholders to discuss measures to protect the bridge and its surrounding environment.

During the forum, participants observed the damage caused by sand harvesting around the bridge and agreed that the activity should stop immediately. Under the resolution, sand harvesting within one kilometre of Tiva Bridge is prohibited, with the county security team expected to enforce the relevant laws.

For residents and other bridge users, the move is about more than stopping sand harvesting—it is about protecting an important crossing that supports daily movement, businesses and access to essential services. Continued damage to the bridge could disrupt the lives and livelihoods of communities that depend on it.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) will undertake repairs on the damaged bridge, while the multi-agency team will continue working with the community to safeguard the infrastructure and prevent further damage.

Hon. Nding’o called for cooperation from residents, sand harvesters and other stakeholders, stressing the need to protect Tiva Bridge for the benefit of the communities that rely on it every day.
