Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe has urged Kitui residents to prepare for the October–November–December 2026 rainfall season which is expected to be enhanced by El Niño conditions.
Dr. Malombe was flanked by County Commissioner Erastus Mbui, officials from the County Department of Meteorological Services and security agencies as he addressed members of the Fourth Estate at the County Headquarters today.
In a joint statement signed by the Governor and County Commissioner Erastus Mbui, the Kitui leadership said the county is expected to experience above-normal rainfall, presenting both opportunities and risks.
“The expected rainfall conditions during the OND 2026 season would likely be characterized by periods of heavy downpours which may result to mud slides, flash floods and overflow of rivers, streams, and water channels.”
Residents, particularly those in flood-prone areas, were urged to remain alert, follow official weather advisories, avoid crossing flooded rivers and roads, and relocate to safer ground where necessary.
He encouraged residents to harvest and store rainwater, prepare farms early and adopt soil and water conservation measures.
“At the same time, we wish to emphasize that the anticipated rainfall should not only be viewed as a threat but also as an opportunity to strengthen food security, improve water availability, and enhance economic activities across the County.” He read.
The *County Chief the county has strengthened disaster preparedness through early-warning systems, drainage clearance, disease surveillance and emergency response measures.*
“We therefore call upon all community leaders, households, institutions, and stakeholders to work together in implementing the recommended measures and supporting one another during this period.” Said Governor Malombe.
