Kitui Government Issues El Niño Alert, Urges Residents to Prepare for Heavy Rains

Date:

The County Government of Kitui has issued a public advisory warning residents to prepare for above-average rainfall expected during the October-November-December (OND) 2026 season, urging households and communities to take early precautions against possible flooding and other weather-related risks.

According to the advisory, the Kenya Meteorological Services Authority forecasts fairly to well-distributed rainfall across Kitui County, with prolonged wet spells and occasional isolated storms. The anticipated weather conditions are linked to a strengthening El Niño and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), which are expected to contribute to wetter conditions across East Africa.

The county government is encouraging residents to turn the expected rains into an opportunity by harvesting and safely storing rainwater, preparing farms early, planting suitable certified seeds and strengthening soil conservation structures. Farmers have also been urged to plant and preserve pasture, prepare hay and silage for livestock, and plant and nurture fruit and forest trees.

However, the advisory cautions that the rains could bring flash floods, overflowing rivers and dams, damaged roads, soil erosion, water contamination and disease outbreaks. Residents have been warned against crossing flooded rivers and drifts, while families living near riverbanks, dams and other flood-prone areas have been urged to identify safer, higher ground and relocate early where necessary.

The county has further advised residents to drink boiled or treated water, clear drainage around their homes, secure important documents and emergency supplies, protect livestock and seek medical attention promptly if they develop symptoms such as sudden watery diarrhoea, vomiting or severe weakness. Residents have also been urged to act promptly on official weather warnings.

Residents requiring emergency assistance can contact the Kitui County Emergency Line on 0702 615 888 or 0143 610 403, or reach the Kenya Red Cross Society through its toll-free number 1199.

The message from the county government is clear: prepare early, stay alert and make the expected rains an opportunity for improved water security, farming and food production while prioritising safety.
