Nairobi businessman and Kitui son Boniface Mutia has challenged political leaders to embrace people-centred leadership, insisting that serving wananchi should not be a seasonal exercise driven by election campaigns. Mutia says residents deserve leaders who remain accessible, responsive and committed to addressing their concerns long after the campaign rallies are over.
Speaking over the weekend in Matinyani and Kauma, Kitui West, where he accompanied former Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu during her campaign trail, Mutia called for a new approach to leadership that puts the needs of ordinary citizens first. He argued that political slogans and roadside rallies mean little if leaders disappear when the people who elected them need their support most.

“Politics is not a seasonal job,” was the message behind Mutia’s appeal, as he challenged leaders to remain connected to the communities they represent. He pointed out that challenges facing families, including hospital bills and other pressing needs, cannot wait for the next election cycle, adding that genuine leadership must be demonstrated through consistent engagement and practical support.
Mutia also openly declared his support for Ngilu, popularly known as *Kava Mama*, as political realignments and conversations around Kitui’s future continue to gather momentum. His appearance alongside the former governor signals his position in the unfolding political debate, with his message centred on leadership that listens, responds and stands with wananchi during difficult moments.
“Kitui deserves better” was the central theme of Mutia’s message, which called for leaders who are willing to pick up the phone when residents need them, rather than only reaching for the microphone during campaigns. As the county’s political landscape continues to take shape, his remarks have added to the growing debate over accountability, accessibility and the kind of leadership Kitui residents want going forward.
