OL KALAU MOMENT? Migwani By-Election Emerges as Key Test of Kalonzo’s Political Strength Ahead of 2027

The Migwani Ward by-election is shaping up to be a major political test for Wiper Patriotic Front leader Dr. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka ahead of the 2027 General Election, with party leaders rallying behind candidate Munyoki Mwangangi following his clearance by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Leading hundreds of Wiper supporters in Migwani town, Ol Kalou MP Sammy Kamau declared that the November 17, 2026, by-election would be about more than the vacant MCA seat, describing it as an opportunity for the Kamba community to demonstrate its political influence and reaffirm its loyalty to Kalonzo.

Kamau urged Migwani residents to rally behind Mwangangi, arguing that the contest would be closely watched as an indicator of Kalonzo’s political standing in Ukambani. He framed the race as a broader political contest between Kalonzo and President William Ruto, calling on residents to deliver a decisive victory for the Wiper candidate.

“This by-election is not a contest between our children from Migwani; it is a contest between our son, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Ruto. Let us stamp our authority and command respect. This is our son’s bedroom, and we cannot settle for anything less,” Kamau declared.

The high-profile mobilisation brought together an array of Wiper and allied leaders, including Kitui Woman Representative Dr. Irene Kasalu, Makueni Woman Representative Rose Museo, Machakos Woman Representative Kamene Kasimbi, Machakos Senator Kavindu Muthama, Kiambu Senator Karagu wa Thangwa, Kitui Central MP Dr. Makali Mulu, Kathiani MP Robert Mbui, and Kitui West MP Edith Nyenze. Other leaders present included Dr. Mbaya Kimwele, Waziri Kimanga, lawyer Ndegwa Njiru, Fridah Makasi, hundreds of MCAs and several political aspirants.

The strong turnout highlighted the strategic importance the party attaches to the Migwani contest as political alignments begin to take shape ahead of 2027. For Wiper, retaining influence in its traditional strongholds could strengthen its bargaining power and reinforce its claim to regional political leadership.

The Migwani Ward seat fell vacant following the resignation of former Wiper MCA Paul Maluki, who left the position to take up a new role as a County Assembly Clerk. With Mwangangi now cleared to contest, the focus shifts to the campaign trail, where parties and candidates will seek to translate political endorsements and public rallies into votes on November 17.

As the race gathers momentum, Migwani is emerging as a closely watched political battleground, with the outcome likely to shape conversations about Wiper’s grassroots strength and the wider political calculations unfolding in Ukambani ahead of the 2027 General Election.
