Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua has raised concerns over what he describes as inadequate support from the National Government towards the development of municipalities and emerging urban centres across Kitui County.
Wambua said the growing population in urban areas such as Kitui, Mwingi, Kabati, Mutomo, Kyuso and Tseikuru is putting increasing pressure on existing infrastructure and essential services. He noted that the centres require better roads, drainage systems, water and sanitation services, waste management, markets, street lighting and proper urban planning.
In a Statement before the Senate Standing Committee on Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations, the Senator sought details of national government programmes, projects and funding directed towards urban development in Kitui over the past five years.
He particularly wants the committee to provide information on support channelled through the Kenya Urban Support Programme (KUSP), including KUSP II, as well as other national urban development initiatives. He also wants an update on the implementation of projects targeting roads, drainage, water, sewerage and other essential urban infrastructure.
Wambua further called for clarification on measures being taken to strengthen the capacity of Kitui’s municipalities and other urban institutions. These include support for urban planning, land-use management, revenue mobilisation, development control, preparation of integrated urban development plans and provision of adequate technical staff and equipment.

The Senator also wants the National Government to explain how resources for urban development are allocated among municipalities and emerging urban centres. He called for equitable support for Kitui, Mwingi and other growing centres, particularly investments in climate-resilient infrastructure that can withstand future challenges and accommodate continued population growth.
