President William Ruto is reportedly intensifying efforts to neutralize Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s long-standing influence in the Ukambani region, setting the stage for a fierce political duel ahead of the 2027 general election.

With the team from State house led by Deputy President making frequent inroads into Kitui, Machakos, and Makueni counties — often accompanied by development pledges and state appointments — analysts believe the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition is targeting a significant chunk of the Ukambani vote that has traditionally backed Kalonzo.

Yet, observers warn that the opposition may be ill-prepared to counter Ruto’s growing influence unless they rethink their strategy. A senior political analyst noted, “Opposition leaders must go beyond reactive politics and present a solid, united front with clear development alternatives. Otherwise, Ruto will exploit every crack to his advantage.”

Despite Kalonzo’s recent flurry of rallies across Ukambani to consolidate his base, cracks are already showing within the Wiper Party. Internal squabbles, especially over members who have visited State House or shown signs of cooperation with President Ruto, have raised concerns of growing intolerance and authoritarianism within the party ranks.

“The focus on punishing members for political engagements rather than building a national vision is counterproductive,” one local political commentator observed. “Chasing leaders for visiting State House won’t win votes. It only paints Wiper as insecure and out of touch with political realities.”

Critics argue that such moves could alienate moderate voices within Wiper and push them closer to Kenya Kwanza, further weakening Kalonzo’s grip on the region. The opposition must urgently shift from rhetoric to tangible action if it hopes to present a formidable challenge.

For now, the political chessboard in Ukambani is shifting — and unless Wiper reforms from within and addresses the concerns of its grassroots supporters, President Ruto’s ambition to tilt the region in his favor may no longer be far-fetched.
