On Monday 25th May 2026 – Kitui Executive for Agriculture and Livestock Dr. Stephen Mbaya Kimwele launched the excavation of the Momoka Kwa Mulu Earth Dam in Kathozyweni, Mui Ward, Mwingi Central Sub-County, in a bid to address persistent water scarcity and improve livelihoods for residents and their livestock.

The 20,000 cubic metre earth dam is expected to serve more than 3,000 households, 27,000 cattle and 45,000 goats, with the capacity to retain water throughout the year without drying up. For years, residents have been trekking over 15 kilometres to fetch water from Ikoo, a situation that has heavily burdened women and children, affected household productivity and negatively impacted learning among school-going children.

Speaking during the launch, Dr. Mbaya noted that one of the key pledges made by Governor Dr. Julius Malombe to the people of Kitui was the construction of an earth dam in every ward to enhance access to water for both domestic and agricultural use. He said the county government remains committed to improving food security and livelihoods through sustainable water harvesting projects.

Dr. Mbaya further stated that Governor Malombe’s administration is implementing an integrated approach in expanding water access through the construction of earth dams, sub-surface wells and other water infrastructure projects aimed at ensuring water is accessible to both people and livestock across the county.

He urged beneficiaries to take advantage of the project by establishing kitchen gardens once the dam is completed, encouraging families to grow vegetables such as sukuma wiki, tomatoes and other crops to improve household nutrition and generate income.

He was accompanied by MCA for Mui ward Cornelius Muthami alongside other County Officers.
