Kitui County Government has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable water management and environmental conservation after participating in the “Run for Rain Kitui Marathon” organized by Green Africa Group in partnership with various stakeholders.
The event, held in Kitui, attracted hundreds of residents, youth groups, environmental champions, and development partners who turned up to advocate for climate action, water conservation, and environmental sustainability. Representing the County Government, County Executive Committee Member for Culture, Gender, Youth, ICT, Sports and Social Services, Phoebe Mutemi, praised participants for their enthusiasm and dedication to the cause.
Addressing runners at the finish line, Ms. Mutemi described the marathon as more than a sporting activity, saying it served as a powerful platform for mobilizing communities to take action against the effects of climate change. She encouraged residents to maintain the spirit of collective responsibility in protecting the environment and securing the countyโs future.
The CECM highlighted the County Governmentโs ongoing investments in boreholes, sand dams, water pans, and piped water projects aimed at improving access to clean and safe water across Kitui. She noted that water remains critical to public health, agriculture, and economic growth, emphasizing the need for sustainable management of available resources.
Ms. Mutemi further urged households to embrace rainwater harvesting and conserve every drop of water while protecting rivers, springs, wetlands, and other natural water sources. She said safeguarding water resources was essential for ensuring long-term water security and building resilience against climate change.
The County Government, she added, will continue working closely with Green Africa Group, community organizations, and development partners to expand water harvesting initiatives, tree planting programs, sand dam construction, and public awareness campaigns aimed at creating a greener and more climate-resilient Kitui.
The event was also attended by Chief Officer for Youth, Sports and ICT Nason Kang’alya, alongside other county officials and stakeholders committed to advancing environmental conservation and sustainable development in the county.
