The Machakos County Assembly has approved a KSh16.42 billion budget for the 2026/2027 financial year, paving the way for the implementation of key development programmes across the county.
The budget, amounting to KSh16,415,961,702, was passed unanimously following extensive debate and scrutiny of the Budget and Appropriations Committee report presented by its chairperson, Hon. Paul Wambua.
The approved estimates allocate KSh11.48 billion to recurrent expenditure and KSh4.93 billion to development projects.
Healthcare has received the largest allocation at KSh5.71 billion, reflecting the county government’s focus on strengthening health facilities, improving access to medicines and medical supplies, maintaining equipment and expanding specialised services.
The Assembly has also increased funding for road infrastructure. The allocation for access roads has risen from KSh21.34 million to KSh200.34 million. Among the roads identified for priority include Kithini-Vota Road, Matuu-Equity Lane Road, Matuu Hospital Loop Road and Gossip Road.
The budget further prioritises education and skills development through increased investment in ECDE classroom construction, learning materials and Vocational Training Centres.
To support economic empowerment, the Assembly approved KSh100 million for the Wikwatyo Fund and an additional KSh100 million targeting women, youth and special groups.
Members also emphasised fiscal responsibility, including the settlement of verified pending bills and improved revenue collection. The county has set an Own Source Revenue target of KSh3.7 billion for the financial year.
Speaking after the approval, the Speaker commended Members of the County Assembly for what he described as robust deliberations and detailed scrutiny of the estimates.
With the Assembly’s approval, the budget will now be forwarded to the Governor for assent before implementation begins.
The passage of the estimates sets the stage for the rollout of programmes aimed at improving service delivery, infrastructure, healthcare, education and economic opportunities across Machakos County in the 2026/2027 financial year.
