Concerns have been raised over the cutting down of old trees around the Tana Athi Water Works Development Agency (TANATHI) offices in Kitui, with calls for the institution to prioritize environmental conservation and protect mature trees.
Residents and environmental conservation advocates have urged the authority to reconsider the cutting of the old trees, saying the compound has lost much of its natural beauty and now resembles “Gedi ruins.”
The concerns come at a time when the National Government is emphasizing tree conservation, environmental protection and increased tree planting across the country. Advocates argue that protecting existing mature trees should be given equal priority to planting new ones.
They are calling on TARDA and other institutions to avoid unnecessary or haphazard tree cutting and instead explore alternatives that allow development while preserving old and valuable trees.
