Insecurity linked to camel herders from a neighbouring community dominated discussions on Sunday during a massive women’s empowerment and public engagement programme held at Mutha Town Playground in Kitui South Constituency.
Kitui South MP Dr. Racheal Kaki Nyamai, who hosted the event alongside Mutha Ward MCA Hon. Dominic Mwamisi alias Ndawa, said the continued presence of camels on farms has become a major concern for residents, with the community calling for urgent intervention to restore peace and protect livelihoods.
Dr. Nyamai said local leaders have been engaging the national government and the Ministry of Interior in search of a lasting solution to the insecurity challenge. She said the leadership was working with President William Ruto’s administration to ensure residents of Mutha and neighbouring areas can live and conduct their activities without fear.
The MP emphasized that the camel-related conflict has affected the peaceful coexistence of communities, particularly as residents continue to raise concerns over the movement of herds into farms. She called for decisive action to prevent further confrontations and ensure the safety of residents and their property.
Other leaders at the event reaffirmed their commitment to working closely with the national government to address insecurity while accelerating development across the region. Among those present were Kitui East MP Hon. Nimrod Mbai, Mwingi West MP Hon. Charles Nguna Ngusya (CNN), former Cabinet Secretary Penina Malonza, former Mwingi Central MP Joe Mutambu, Hon. Bonnie Musambi, Hon. John Kisangau (Mbaki Mbaki), Hon. Martha Mati, Kikutha MCA David Munyao and Mathama Kieti (Dr. Othos), among others.
The leaders said peace and security remain essential for meaningful development, urging the relevant government agencies to intensify efforts to resolve the camel-herder dispute and protect residents’ farms and livelihoods.
The empowerment programme also focused on strengthening women’s welfare groups through support aimed at improving household incomes and livelihoods under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda. Leaders pledged to continue supporting grassroots initiatives while pushing for greater government intervention on security, development and economic empowerment in Mutha. #Kaziiendelee
