The government has released fresh details surrounding the tragic fire incident at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, which claimed the lives of 16 learners and left dozens injured. Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba described the incident as heartbreaking, confirming that 79 students sustained injuries during the blaze, with seven still receiving treatment in hospital.

According to the Ministry of Education, preliminary investigations have established that the fire was an act of arson. Eight learners are currently under investigation in connection with the incident as detectives continue gathering evidence and recording statements from witnesses and school officials.

The CS further revealed that two teachers had allegedly received prior warnings from a section of Form Three students about a planned unrest in the school. However, the teachers reportedly failed to take appropriate action to stop the planned attack, a lapse that authorities believe may have contributed to the tragedy.

In response to the incident, the Ministry of Education has dissolved the school’s Board of Management. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is also expected to take disciplinary action against the principal and teachers accused of ignoring the warning signs before the fire broke out.

The government has assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that all those found responsible will be held accountable. Leaders and Kenyans across the country continue to mourn the young lives lost in one of the deadliest school fire incidents in recent years.
