Kitui Senator and Senate Deputy Minority Leader Enoch Kiio Wambua has challenged the United Opposition to end its prolonged uncertainty over the 2027 presidential ticket, arguing that Kenyans deserve clarity on who will seek their mandate to lead the country. Wambua wants Wiper Patriotic Front leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka declared the opposition’s presidential flagbearer, saying continued delays risk leaving voters without a clear alternative as the next General Election approaches.
Speaking during a meet-the-people tour of Katse and Kyuso towns in Mwingi North, a political stronghold of Kalonzo, Wambua said the opposition’s failure to settle on a candidate was not merely an internal political matter but one with wider consequences for millions of Kenyans. He argued that voters need to know who will carry the opposition’s agenda on issues affecting their daily lives, including the cost of living, employment, public services, economic management and accountability in government.
Wambua maintained that Kalonzo’s political experience, national reach and record in opposition politics make him the strongest contender to unite the anti-government vote. He said the opposition should stop prolonging negotiations and focus on presenting Kenyans with a credible and organised alternative to President William Ruto’s administration. “The delay is making Kenyans tired. Why is it so hard to make this all-important declaration?” he posed.
The senator’s demand comes as political parties and coalitions begin positioning themselves for the 2027 contest, with the question of who will lead the opposition likely to shape alliances and voter choices across the country. Wambua warned that continued divisions could frustrate voters seeking a credible alternative, while a timely agreement could give the opposition more time to develop policies, build grassroots structures and convince Kenyans that it is ready to govern.
He urged Kenyans to rally behind Kalonzo, whom he described as a trusted father figure—“Baba”—capable of uniting the country and delivering transformative leadership. Beyond the battle for the opposition ticket, Wambua’s message places the 2027 contest squarely before the public as a choice about the country’s future direction, arguing that Kenyans should not be left waiting indefinitely for political leaders to decide who deserves their vote.
