Malombe Commissions Mutomo Hospital Outpatient Block and Main Theatre in Major Healthcare Upgrade

Date:

Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe has commissioned the new Outpatient Block and Main Theatre at Mutomo Sub-County Hospital, marking a significant step in efforts to strengthen healthcare services in Kitui South and surrounding areas.

The facilities are expected to expand the hospital’s capacity to handle outpatient consultations and surgical procedures, bringing essential medical services closer to residents who previously faced challenges accessing specialised care.

The commissioning, held on Friday, October 2, 2026, forms part of the county government’s ongoing investment in healthcare infrastructure aimed at improving service delivery across the 40 wards of Kitui County.

The new Outpatient Block is expected to improve the handling of patients seeking medical attention, while the Main Theatre will provide additional capacity for surgical services at the facility. The developments are intended to support more efficient patient care and ease pressure on existing hospital infrastructure.

The hospital is also set to benefit from a digital X-ray machine and other essential medical equipment. The additional equipment is expected to strengthen diagnostic services and support healthcare workers in examining patients and making informed treatment decisions.

For residents of Mutomo and neighbouring communities, the expanded facilities could reduce the need to travel long distances in search of services that can be provided closer to home, subject to the availability of medical personnel, equipment and other operational resources.

The project is among more than 119 projects implemented by the Malombe-led administration since August 2022, reflecting the county government’s continued investment in public infrastructure and essential services.

Healthcare remains a critical concern in Kitui, where long distances between settlements and health facilities can make timely access to treatment difficult, particularly for residents in remote and rural communities. Investments in local hospitals are therefore important in bringing services closer to the people.

Area Member of County Assembly David Masaku attended the commissioning alongside several County Executive Committee Members (CECMs) and Chief Officers, underscoring the participation of county leadership in the expansion of healthcare infrastructure.

The commissioning of the outpatient block and main theatre adds to the ongoing efforts to improve the capacity of public health facilities across the county. However, the long-term impact of the investment will depend on effective management, adequate staffing, consistent supplies of medicines and reliable maintenance of medical equipment.

With the new facilities now commissioned, attention will turn to ensuring that they are fully equipped and operational to meet the healthcare needs of Mutomo residents and the wider Kitui South community.
