The political landscape in Mwingi’s constituencies could be heading for a significant shift as Hon. Martha Mati, popularly known as “Happy Landings,” steps up her bid for the Mwingi North parliamentary seat ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Mati, who served as President William Ruto’s chief agent in Mwingi during the 2022 General Election, announced her intention to contest the seat three months ago. Since then, her political entry has continued to attract attention and generate fresh conversations across the constituency.
A university lecturer and counsellor with a strong interest in community development, Mati is presenting herself as a grassroots-oriented leader whose political agenda centres on empowerment, particularly for women and local community groups.
Her mobilisation efforts have already taken shape through empowerment programmes targeting welfare groups in Kyuso and Tharaka, where she has interacted with residents and community organisations. The engagements have provided her with an opportunity to build grassroots networks and articulate her vision for Mwingi North.
Her entry also introduces a different dynamic into a constituency whose political scene has traditionally been dominated by established male figures.
Mwingi North sits within the broader political sphere associated with Wiper leader and former Vice President Dr. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, making the constituency one of the closely watched parliamentary contests in Ukambani as the 2027 elections approach.
While the race is still in its early stages, Mati’s growing visibility is already adding a new dimension to the political contest. Her supporters believe her background in education, counselling and community mobilisation could offer voters an alternative leadership proposition.
As more aspirants position themselves for the 2027 race, the big question will be whether Mati can translate her growing grassroots presence into a formidable electoral campaign.
For now, Martha Mati has entered the Mwingi North race with an ambition to challenge the traditional political order—and she intends to make her voice heard.
