Hardworking Mwingi West Member of Parliament Charles Nguna on Monday issued Smart Driving Licences to 107 bodaboda riders who successfully completed Phase IV of a riding and road safety training programme fully sponsored through the Mwingi West NG-CDF.
The MP also launched a new motor vehicle driving training programme where 91 residents have already enrolled and will undergo fully sponsored training before receiving their driving licences upon completion.
Speaking during the event, Nguna said the initiative is aimed at empowering youths economically while improving road safety standards within Mwingi West Constituency. He noted that many young people depend on the bodaboda sector for livelihood and therefore require proper training and certification.
According to the legislator, the programme started in 2021 and has so far benefited more than 800 bodaboda riders across the constituency. The beneficiaries have been equipped with valid driving licences and road safety skills to enhance professionalism in the transport sector.
Nguna said the programme has contributed significantly to the reduction of road accidents and fatalities involving bodaboda riders in the area. He added that riders are now more disciplined and knowledgeable about traffic regulations compared to previous years.
The MP further observed that the initiative has boosted economic growth within the constituency as many trained riders are now operating confidently and earning stable incomes to support their families.
Leaders and security officials who attended the event praised the programme, terming it one of the most impactful empowerment initiatives in the region. They encouraged more young people to embrace training and follow traffic rules while on the roads.
Among those present were officials from the Migwani Sub-county administration led by the DCC and NGAO officers, the Migwani Sub-county Traffic Base Commander, the OCS of Nguutani Police Station, as well as regional officials from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
Residents who attended the event expressed satisfaction with the MP’s development record, saying the constituency has witnessed major empowerment programmes under his leadership. Many stated that the driving training initiative has transformed the lives of hundreds of youths in the area.
Supporters of the legislator maintained that Nguna has exceeded public expectations through practical development programmes and warned political opponents against underestimating his popularity ahead of future elections.
