NAIROBI – The Wiper patriotic front has opted for an opinion poll to pick its Kitui gubernatorial flagbearer ahead of the 2027 General Election, in a move aimed at avoiding bruising party primaries and preserving unity within its ranks.
The decision places three key contenders—Kitui Central MP Makali Mulu, Kitui Woman Representative Irene Kasalu, and Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua—in a tightly watched popularity contest that will measure their support across the county. Party insiders say the scientific polling approach is intended to produce a credible, data-backed candidate capable of uniting the electorate.
According to sources familiar with the plan, the results will be formally presented at the party’s command centre, where Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka is expected to unveil the winner and immediately hand over the party ticket. The move signals a shift toward consensus-building within the party as it prepares for a competitive gubernatorial race in Kitui.
Behind the scenes, efforts are underway to ensure the process does not fracture the party. The two aspirants who will not clinch the ticket are expected to support the eventual flagbearer, with assurances of inclusion in future political arrangements should the broader opposition coalition succeed in forming the next government.
Party strategists are also keen to conclude the exercise before the last quarter of 2026 to prevent prolonged internal campaigns that could deplete resources and weaken the party’s grassroots machinery. The early decision is seen as part of a wider effort by Wiper to consolidate its traditional support base in Ukambani and present a united front heading into 2027.
