A groundswell of support is building for John Makau Kimwele, the current Chief Officer for Finance, Revenue Management, and Accounting in Kitui County, as calls intensify for him to vie for the Mwingi Central parliamentary seat in the 2027 general elections.
Kimwele, a respected technocrat hailing from the resource-rich Mui Basin, is being hailed by supporters as a leader of integrity, vision, and developmental focus. His name is increasingly being floated as a viable alternative to the incumbent MP, Gideon Mulyungi, whose leadership style has come under sharp criticism from some quarters of the constituency.
Critics accuse Mulyungi of sowing division and failing to work collaboratively with other leaders—a stance they say has hindered key development initiatives in the region. In contrast, Kimwele is being praised for his humility, professionalism, and deep understanding of the constituency’s pressing socio-economic issues.

“Makau’s financial expertise and inclusive leadership style make him the right candidate to take Mwingi Central forward,” said a resident during a recent public meeting in the constituency.
A seasoned public servant with a solid background in finance and governance, Kimwele’s entry into politics could inject new energy into efforts to address Mwingi Central’s longstanding challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, chronic water shortages, and high youth unemployment.
His close ties to Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, a towering political figure in Ukambani, are also seen as a strategic advantage, particularly in a region where the Wiper Democratic Movement remains a dominant force.
Political analysts argue that if Kimwele throws his hat into the ring, the contest for Mwingi Central could become one of the most closely watched races in Kitui County. A bid by Kimwele would likely pose a significant challenge to Mulyungi’s re-election bid, potentially ending his two-term reign.
While Kimwele has yet to make a formal declaration, the growing pressure from constituents and local political stakeholders may soon compel him to take a stand. For now, all eyes remain on him as Mwingi Central awaits a possible shift in its political arena.
