National Liberal Party leader Dr. Augustus Kyalo Muli on Thursday led a demonstration caravan from Kaveta Junction through Kalundu to the office of the Kitui County Commissioner, where he presented a petition demanding urgent government intervention over the increasing cases of violence against women in the county.
Dr. Muli was accompanied by party officials, including the party secretary and other leaders, who joined hundreds of residents in calling for enhanced security measures to protect women and vulnerable members of society. The demonstrators expressed concern over what they described as a worrying trend of killings and attacks targeting women.
Speaking during the procession, Dr. Muli accused security agencies of failing to adequately address the growing insecurity in Kitui. He said residents were living in fear following a series of incidents involving women who have reportedly been assaulted, maimed, raped and killed under unclear circumstances.
The National Liberal Party leader urged the national government to immediately deploy additional security personnel and strengthen investigations into the reported crimes. He emphasized that those responsible for the attacks must be identified and prosecuted to restore public confidence in law enforcement agencies.
Dr. Muli warned that continued inaction by the authorities could push residents to seek alternative ways of protecting themselves and their families. He said the people of Kitui were growing increasingly frustrated by the lack of answers regarding the recent killings.
The petition submitted to the County Commissioner outlined several demands, including enhanced police patrols, faster investigations into reported cases, and the establishment of measures aimed at improving the safety of women across the county. Demonstrators called on the government to treat the matter as an urgent security concern.
The protest ended peacefully, with residents expressing hope that the government would respond swiftly to their concerns. Community leaders who participated in the demonstration reiterated the need for collective efforts among security agencies, local leaders and citizens to curb violence and ensure justice for victims and their families.
