Kitui East Member of Parliament Hon. Nimrod Mbai has sent a message of encouragement and reassurance to more than 600 students and over 500 parents of Ithangathi Girls Senior Secondary School following a dormitory fire incident allegedly caused by students.
In a message addressed to parents and students, the legislator expressed disappointment over the destruction of the dormitory, describing the incident as unfortunate while urging the learners to value educational investments made for their benefit.
“I know you are proud to be daughters of Kusaasa Kusaasa. Daddy gave you the best dormitory in Kitui County, and the attempt to bring it down was a very unfortunate decision,” Mbai stated.
The MP highlighted several development projects he has initiated at the institution, including a modern dormitory completed two years ago, a state-of-the-art laboratory currently at 85 percent completion, and plans to procure an Isuzu 58-seater school bus in the next financial year.
Following the incident, school management had reportedly proposed a KSh 6,000 penalty fee for each student before returning to school. However, Mbai said he intervened and appealed to the school’s Board of Management to waive the penalties.
According to the MP, the damaged dormitory will instead be repaired using funds from the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) emergency kitty.
“Therefore, no student will pay the KSh 6,000 penalty, and the dormitory will be renovated within the shortest time possible,” he said.
Mbai further announced that his office would visit the school to assess the situation and coordinate restoration efforts.
He also expressed gratitude to the Board of Management, the school principal, non-teaching staff, and students, while emphasizing the importance of discipline and responsible conduct among learners.
The incident comes amid growing concerns over cases of unrest and destruction of school property in learning institutions across the country.
