The race for the Kitui East parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election is gathering momentum following the declaration by former Kenyan Ambassador and former MP Julius Kiema Kilonzo that he will seek to reclaim the constituency seat. Kiema’s entry sets the stage for what is expected to be a fiercely contested battle against the incumbent MP, Hon. Nimrod Mbai, who is widely expected to defend his seat.
Ambassador Kiema, who previously represented the then Mutito Constituency for two terms before serving Kenya in diplomatic assignments, has been intensifying grassroots consultations and has recently received endorsements from sections of former local leaders backing his parliamentary bid. His supporters argue that his experience in public service and diplomacy positions him as a strong contender capable of championing development in Kitui East.
On the other hand, MP Nimrod Mbai remains a formidable political force with an established grassroots network and is expected to mount a strong re-election campaign. Political analysts believe the contest between the two seasoned politicians could emerge as one of the most closely watched parliamentary races in Kitui County, with both camps expected to intensify mobilization efforts as the 2027 elections draw closer.
