Kitui Woman Representative Irene Muthoni Kasalu is increasingly emerging as one of the most active figures in the race for the 2027 Kitui gubernatorial seat, with her sustained grassroots mobilization fueling debate over the evolving political landscape. Kasalu has continued to traverse different parts of the county through empowerment programmes, public engagements and community meetings, reinforcing her visibility as she positions herself for the contest.
Political commentator Yoana Kimwele told the Kitui Professional Forum that gubernatorial hopefuls should shift their focus to sustained voter engagement rather than relying on boardroom politics. “I keep telling aspirants to go to the ground. Your strategy should be how to convert voters to join your camp. Kitui is vast, and anyone seeking to lead the county must invest heavily in grassroots mobilization,” he said. Kimwele argued that Kasalu’s extensive ground campaign is setting the pace for the race and should not be underestimated.
While some political observers interpret Kasalu’s growing countywide presence as increasing pressure on her rivals, she has indirectly threatened other gubernatorial aspirants. Instead, analysts say her aggressive grassroots strategy is raising the level of competition and setting the stage for what is expected to be a highly contested 2027 gubernatorial election.
