Machakos County is on the cusp of a major transformation in water access following the ongoing rehabilitation of Maruba Dam and its integration into the wider Machakos Water Supply Project, a move aimed at addressing decades of water scarcity in the region.

For years, Machakos and the broader Eastern Region have grappled with unreliable water supply, often reduced to a narrative of neglect and underdevelopment. Communities have endured persistent shortages, with access to clean and reliable water remaining a distant dream for many households.

However, the current intervention marks a turning point.

The project, being implemented under the stewardship of Tanathi Water Works Development Agency (TAWWDA), involves a comprehensive upgrade of critical infrastructure. This includes the installation of high-capacity elevated steel storage tanks, modern electro-mechanical pump sets and advanced intake and transmission systems.

According to project details, the upgrades are designed to enhance water abstraction, improve storage capacity and streamline distribution across key areas. The improvements are expected to stabilize water pressure within the network and significantly boost efficiency, ensuring a more reliable and sustainable supply.

Once complete, the project will benefit thousands of residents in Machakos Township and surrounding areas, including Muvuti, Kimutwa, Kiima Kimwe, Mumbuni and Katheka Kai.

The initiative is also seen as a critical step in restoring dignity and unlocking socio-economic potential in the region, where water scarcity has long hindered development.

Meanwhile, the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration has been playing a key supportive role in the project’s implementation. The department is facilitating coordination at the grassroots level, ensuring community engagement and maintaining security to safeguard infrastructure and personnel.

Leaders and residents alike have welcomed the development, expressing optimism that the long-standing water challenges in Machakos will soon be a thing of the past.

The Maruba Dam rehabilitation now stands as a symbol of renewed commitment to equitable development and sustainable resource management in Kenya’s semi-arid regions.
