Dormitory Destroyed by Fire at Ithangathi Girls as School Unrest Escalates

SOMBE, KITUI EAST – A dormitory at Ithangathi Girls Secondary School in Sombe was on Tuesday destroyed by fire in an incident linked to ongoing student unrest, leaving several students injured and property worth thousands of shillings destroyed.

Sombe Chief Dismas Kiita confirmed the incident, saying the school administration has since closed the institution and sent all students home as investigations into the cause of the fire continue. The blaze reportedly gutted the dormitory, destroying students’ personal belongings and causing significant losses.

According to the chief, nine students and the school matron sustained injuries and were rushed to Sombe Sub-County Hospital for medical attention, they were treated later joined other students

Chief Kiita urged parents to engage their children in individual conversations during the closure period to help address emerging behavioural concerns and restore discipline in schools. He noted that collaborative efforts between parents, teachers and local leaders are necessary to prevent further incidents of unrest in learning institutions.
