Kitui County Executive for Agriculture and Livestock Dr. Stephen Mbaya Kimwele today launched the excavation of Kwa Kasyathyu Earth Dam in Mulangomi Village, Tseikuru Ward, Mwingi North Sub-County, in a move aimed at improving water access for both domestic and livestock use.

The earth dam, with a capacity of between 20,000 and 25,000 cubic metres, is expected to benefit more than 200 households and support thousands of livestock including 5,000 goats, 3,000 cattle, 1,000 sheep and 300 donkeys. Dr. Kimwele noted that Mwingi North remains one of the leading livestock-producing regions in Kenya, particularly in goat rearing, adding that most residents in Kitui are agro-pastoralists who depend heavily on livestock and farming for their livelihoods.

He said the County Government, *under the leadership of Governor Dr. Julius Malombe, has continued to support livestock improvement programmes through the distribution of improved Galla bucks to farmers, hence the need to invest in water infrastructure to sustain livestock production.

Dr. Kimwele further praised the Governor’s commitment to bringing water closer to wananchi, saying the project will greatly ease the burden faced by residents in search of water during dry seasons.

The County Executive also highlighted ongoing efforts by the county government to revive livestock cooperatives across the County, noting that cooperatives will help farmers bargain for better prices for their animals. He observed that individual farmers are often disadvantaged by market forces, especially during periods of high supply, but collective marketing through cooperatives will strengthen farmers’ negotiating power and improve household incomes.
