Residents of Mui Ward in Mwingi Central Sub-County are set to benefit from improved access to water following the launch of the excavation of the Momoka Kwa Mulu Earth Dam in Kathozyweni by Kitui County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture and Livestock, Dr. Stephen Mbaya Kimwele.
The 20,000 cubic metre earth dam is expected to benefit more than 3,000 households, 27,000 cattle and 45,000 goats by providing a reliable year-round water source. For many years, residents have been forced to walk over 15 kilometres to fetch water from Ikoo, a challenge that has greatly affected families, especially women and children, while also disrupting learning for school-going children and limiting household productivity.
Speaking during the launch, Dr. Mbaya said the project is part of Governor Julius Malombe’s commitment to ensuring every ward in Kitui County has an earth dam to boost water accessibility for both domestic and agricultural use. He noted that the county government is implementing an integrated water development strategy through the construction of earth dams, sub-surface wells and other water infrastructure projects aimed at improving livelihoods and enhancing food security across the county.
Dr. Mbaya further encouraged residents to maximize the benefits of the project by establishing kitchen gardens once the dam is completed, urging families to grow vegetables such as sukuma wiki, tomatoes and other crops to improve household nutrition and generate income. He was accompanied during the launch by Mui Ward MCA Cornelius Muthami and other county officials.
