Kwa siku, Mbondoni – Migwani Road Nears Completion as Government Pushes Connectivity

The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding road infrastructure across the country as part of efforts to drive inclusive socio-economic development, enhance mobility and unlock trade opportunities in previously underserved regions.

Among the flagship projects currently under implementation is the 192-kilometre Kibwezi–Mutomo–Kitui–Migwani–Mbondoni Road (A9/B64), whose construction is steadily progressing and is expected to transform transport and trade across the Lower and Upper Eastern regions once complete.

The strategic corridor links the busy Mombasa–Nairobi Highway to the Mwingi–Garissa Highway, creating a seamless transport network that will ease movement of goods and people. The project has been strongly championed by Charles Nguna, who has consistently lobbied for its implementation despite facing political criticism at some point from sections within the opposition.

Once completed, the road is expected to provide a shorter and more efficient alternative route for cargo from the Port of Mombasa, helping reduce pressure on the often-congested Nairobi–Mombasa Highway. The corridor is also expected to boost trade, agriculture and investment in Kitui, Makueni and neighbouring counties by improving access to markets and essential services.

The road further complements the regional Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor by strengthening connectivity between inland production zones and international markets, positioning Kenya as a key regional trade hub.

Meanwhile, the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration has continued supporting the project through enhanced road safety measures along the corridor to ensure safe movement during and after construction.
