Kitui Governor Julius Malombe today commissioned the KSh 17 million Kaki–Kilali Sump Well Water Supply Project in Mui Ward, Mwingi Central Constituency, in a major boost to water access for residents in the semi-arid region.

The multimillion-shilling project is expected to improve access to clean and reliable water for institutions and households in the area, with beneficiaries including Lundi Primary School, Kyamwenze Secondary School and Lundi Dispensary. The project will be managed by KIMWASCO.

The Governor was accompanied by CPA John Makau Kimwele, who is seeking the Mwingi Central parliamentary seat in 2027. During the commissioning, leaders hailed the project as a transformative investment aimed at addressing the long-standing water challenges facing communities in Mui.

The water project comprises a submersible pump and accessories, a rising main pipeline, distribution lines, air valves, washouts, a 100-cubic-metre masonry water tank, a guard house, solar modules, a pit latrine and three water kiosks. The project is projected to serve at least 1,500 residents directly.

County officials also revealed plans to extend the pipeline through Musokani to Kathonzweni Shopping Centre and Mui Dispensary, with the long-term target of reaching more than 1,000 households across the region.

Speaking during the event, Governor Malombe reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to expanding access to clean water and improving essential services in underserved parts of Kitui County, noting that water infrastructure remains key to enhancing livelihoods, education and healthcare delivery.
