NPS Holds High-Level Security Meeting in Kitui Following Bandit Attack

The National Police Service (NPS) on Friday convened a high-level security meeting at Kwa Kamari Police Station in Kitui County following the deadly attack by suspected bandits at Itimba Ithei on June 5, 2026.

The meeting was chaired by the Principal Deputy to the Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service, Mr. Patrick Tito, SAIG, and brought together senior security commanders from the Kenya Police Service, Administration Police Service, Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and the General Service Unit (GSU).

Mr. Tito was accompanied by the Principal Deputy to the Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service, Dr. Masoud Mwinyi, SAIG, and the Commandant of the General Service Unit, Mr. Ranson Lolmodoni, SAIG.

The security team reviewed the situation in the affected areas of Mboka, Katumba, and Itimba Ithei, with discussions focusing on strengthening security operations, preventing further attacks, and restoring normalcy in the region.

Addressing the meeting, Mr. Tito reaffirmed the National Police Service’s commitment to enhancing security through the deployment of additional personnel and resources. He emphasized that security agencies remain determined to pursue and bring to justice those responsible for the attacks and other criminal activities in the area.

Following the meeting, the delegation met residents at Kwa Kamari Shopping Centre, where they assured the community of the Government’s commitment to protecting lives and property. Residents were also informed of plans to establish strategic security camps to improve surveillance, enhance rapid response capabilities, and boost overall security in the region.

The delegation received a detailed security briefing from the Kitui County Security Committee and reviewed ongoing interventions aimed at addressing insecurity. The meeting highlighted the importance of continued collaboration among security agencies and strengthened partnerships with local communities in combating crime.

Among those present were Director of Operations, Kenya Police Service, Mr. Philip Opiyo, AIG; Director of Operations, DCI, Mr. Samson Kiptum, AIG; Deputy Director of Operations, APS, Mr. Mohamed Alike, AIG; Eastern Region Police Commander, Mr. Stephen Chebet, AIG; Eastern Region APS Commander, Mr. Michael Owino, CP; Regional Criminal Investigations Officer, Mr. Michael Sang’, CP; and members of the Kitui County Security Committee led by Kitui County Commissioner Mr. Erastus Mbai.

The meeting comes amid heightened efforts by security agencies to address recurring security challenges and reassure residents in the affected parts of Kitui County.
