Political debate around the 2027 gubernatorial race in Kitui County is steadily gaining momentum, with supporters of Makali Mulu now intensifying campaigns portraying him as the most suitable candidate to steer the county’s economic transformation agenda.
Backers of the seasoned legislator argue that Hon. Makali Mulu’s strength lies in his deep understanding of public finance management, national budgeting systems, and development planning acquired over more than 14 years in Parliament. They maintain that his experience places him ahead of many potential competitors in the race for the county’s top seat.
The supporters particularly point to his role in parliamentary budget processes, where he has reportedly participated in shaping and scrutinizing national allocations affecting counties across the country. According to the proponents, the Kitui Central MP has mastered critical government financial systems including IFMIS, equitable revenue sharing formulas, donor financing structures, and conditional grant mechanisms.
They argue that such expertise is urgently needed in Kitui County, where concerns over low absorption rates and delayed implementation of development projects have frequently emerged. Supporters claim that the county’s current absorption rate stands at about 62 percent and believe it can significantly improve under a leadership focused on technical efficiency and prudent management.
Advocates of Makali’s candidature further state that counties often struggle not because of lack of funding, but due to revenue leakages, weak administrative systems, and poor negotiations with the National Treasury. They insist that the MP possesses the capacity to seal financial loopholes and maximize development outcomes from available resources.
Beyond budget matters, the supporters also highlight Hon. Makali Mulu’s extensive national and international networks. They cite his engagements with institutions linked to the United Nations, World Bank, and Sustainable Development Goals programs as evidence of his exposure to global development frameworks and investment partnerships.
The leaders backing his gubernatorial ambitions argue that such networks could help unlock major infrastructure and industrial projects in Kitui County. They say the county requires a governor capable of working collaboratively with the national government, development partners, and private investors instead of engaging in endless political confrontations.
Among the sectors they believe could benefit from his leadership include mining, agriculture, and manufacturing. Supporters singled out the limestone deposits in Mutomo, the mango farming belt, and the county’s rare mineral potential as key economic opportunities requiring credible investment negotiations and industrial partnerships.
The allies further claim that Kitui has previously lost major investment opportunities because of poor coordination and vested interests. They referenced the past interest by cement investors in the county’s mineral resources, arguing that the region now requires leadership capable of attracting credible investors and creating long-term industrial off-take agreements.
As early political alignments continue taking shape ahead of 2027, supporters of Makali Mulu insist that the county needs “an administrator, not just a politician.” They maintain that his blend of economic expertise, political experience, and national influence gives him the credentials to run the county’s economy and accelerate development across Kitui County.
